9 by 5 GalleryGallery ListFollowing in the tradition of the Australian Impressionists, recently I have been spending time researching, photographing and painting views of Westernport Bay, the Mornington Peninsula, and Mount Dandenong, for a growing a series of 9 inch by 5 inch oil paintings. These have mostly been produced "Plein Air" or put more simply, completed on site in the one sitting. This method of painting allows the me to appreciate the atmosphere, light and feel of a place so that I, as the artist, can create my own interpretation of what I am seeing as it happens. It lends itself to a freer and more painterly product which for those who like the Impressionist style of painting, love to collect. The size means that the smaller works are much more affordable for those that love art but can not afford to collect larger pieces. They also fit nicely into smaller residences and office spaces especially when placed on the wall in a grouping of three or more. Please note the red dot next to the artwork images in this gallery indicate that the artwork is sold or not available from the artist. Cape Schanck INear the light house on the Victorian coastline, the ocean beach of Cape Schanck is a beautiful spot where the southern ocean meats the Australian continent. In the right weather, the waves crash onto the beach and rocks creating a dramatic scene for artists to capture. Mornington Peninsula IThis painting is derived from a view of the shoreline facing south towards Frankston, Victoria. I did a photo shoot along the beach so could do a series of paintings based on the area. Point Leo IPoint Leo Victoria is an ocean beach famous for surfing. Apart from attracting those that want to catch a wave, the wide sandy beaches and nearby wetlands are a wonderful place for artists. Queenscliff IQueenscliff sits at the entrance to Port Philip Bay, Victoria. There are many historic buildings and sites in the area, as the city has been occupied for over 150 years. Rural Victoria IVictoria has the benefit of many different types of environment. Within its borders are deserts, snow capped mountains, forests, rural farmland, wetlands, rivers, bays and ocean beaches. The areas around the Mornington Peninsula and Dandenong Ranges are my favourites for painting, although I sometimes get tempted away to other spots. Stony Point IStony Point was a favourite painting spot for many Australian artists in the past. What looks like at first inspection, a rather ordinary spot. However, on closer investigation, holds an amazing array of colour and life. From the sunrise each morning to the sunset each evening, the views across Westernport Bay and the wetlands in the area hold colours that change very quickly, challenging the artist to capture them.
