Pastel artwork on Canson pastel paper of a bowl of fruit on a kitchen table. |
Still life has never been my forte, however this year I have had a major commission in oils that was a still life and I have literally fallen over some great compositions in either my kitchen or a local coffee shop that have made great subjects for a still life art work. |
If a great painting is right in front of you, you just have to do it, no matter what the subject is. Usually, I find the enthusiasm and ability to complete the work comes along anyway. If not, I have had a good exercise at something new. |
This composition was sitting on my kitchen table with the light streaming in the window and reflecting from the soft lights under the kitchen bench. I was having a break and enjoying a cup of tea when I looked across the room to see what looked like a fantastic painting in the making. I had no idea I could arrange fruit so well! |
I quickly grabbed my camera and took several shots from varying angles. I chose the best one and did a little work in Photoshop before running out a colour laser to work from. I didn't know how long it would take to complete the work as I had been studying lately and time was not always available, so I decided not to work from life. |
I really wanted a bit of a challenge with this work so I kept my pastel paper at full size, thinking that I could work on the piece for several days or even weeks. What was really surprising is that I got this work done in two days! Apart from a couple of little tweaks, the whole thing was done in about eight hours or less. |
I have to thank James on the Paintings I Love website for the tips he gave me to help complete this work. His ability to look at something and point out the last little thing you need to make it just right is so much appreciated. I posted the art work on to PIL as it was being completed and it has received some amazing comments, it really did push me to try to excel on it. |
