Practice piece for painting class in Diploma of Visual Arts Course at Chisholm, second year. Still life is not my forte, however this year I have decided that no subject is off the list for a challenge. This means doing things I wouldn't normally do, just to make sure that I am taking full advantage of this learning experience at TAFE. |
If a great subject is right in front of you, you just have to do it, no matter what it is. Usually, I find the enthusiasm and ability to complete the work comes along anyway but some things in the past have been a real challenge or less than the standard I hoped for. I should however, be able to paint nearly anything as a professional artist and teacher. The subject should be of no importance if I understand the basics of composition and drawing. |
This scene was one that I found whilst doing some research. It is purely for educational purposes and to show at a couple of my art societies. |
It will, I hope help me to get a good grade for the first semester this year and it has already been awarded a second place at one guild on it's first outing for feedback. |

I really wanted a bit of a challenge with this work so I gave myself a time limit an altered the original image to a layout that I thought more balanced. This meant a little adjusting on the fly - yet another little challenge. |
From 9AM to 1PM I painted and stepped back to do some thinking and adjusting. At 1PM I stopped and signed it. I was very pleased when students at the other end of the room commented positively on the painting. When I walked down there to join them I was also a bit taken by what I had achieved. Wow, I didn't know I had it in me! It just goes to show what you can do if you set some guidelines, limits and just get stuck into it without any fear. |
Still life is fast going from one of my worst subjects to one of my best, just be sheer application and practice! As I said, as a professional I should be able to tackle nearly any subject well if not very well - I just need to keep working at it! |
