Pastel portrait of the artist on the way to the shower. The white part is the towel I am holding. This was an impromptu photo which resulted in a nice enough photo to move me to have a go at a self portrait. |
Whilst on the way to the bathroom my husband decided that he needed more photos of me. This is why there is a towel in the way, as I am not very comfortable in front of the camera. |
A couple of the photos came out far better than I expected, so good that I decided to make them both into artworks. One is now an acrylic painting and the other is this pastel. |

A recent demonstrating artist at one of the guilds I attend helped me approach this when they said that we should be looking at areas of colour and tone, not just what the subject necessarily was, for example a nose, mouth or eyes etc. With this in my mind I have tried to relax and see what I am doing in a new light. What is so great is that it worked so well that I am re-learning how to do all my work with far better results and tackling new subjects that I would have avoided before, such as this self portrait. |
