Abstract Portrait

Abstract Portrait
Medium: Pastel
Base: Paper
Year: 2010
Pastel portrait of the artist derived from a photograph taken at the Rose Garden in front of the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery (MPRG) in Mornington, Victoria. The photograph has been cropped and several filters applied in Photoshop. A colour laser print was then run out and used as a guide for this final work.
I have not thought of attempting to do anything approaching abstract or similar in style before. It, frankly, has been an area that I have not been interested in.
What I have thought of though, is that you don't have to be so abstract that items are unrecognizable. There are "shades of grey", as it were, to most artistic styles. There is no reason why I can not put my own interpretation to my art with own version of abstract.
This work is not realistic, it has been broken down into a smaller set of colours than I usually use and a lot of detail has been removed to get a more dramatic effect. The contrast in the lighting has been dramatized and is also helping to achieve this look.
What is so great is that it worked fairly well that I am continually learning how to do all my work with far better results and tackling new subjects that I would have avoided before, such as this self portrait.
