Janet Matthews works with pencil, mainly colour pencil and graphite. Her pencils of choice are Faber Castell Polychromos and Faber Castell Art Grip as well as the Series 9000 greylead pencils.

Pencil can achieve some amazing results if used with skill and expertise. Janet has managed to create detailed and beautiful artworks with this medium.

Janet's brilliant use of coloured pencils and graphite has justifiably placed her in the forefront of artists using her chosen mediums. Her realistic, detailed and gentle drawings of animals and birds are keenly collected in Australia and overseas. Janet manages to capture the personality of her subjects, often showing the “conversation” between them and reflecting Janet's own personality and sense of humour. By capturing her subjects' quirky behaviour, her drawings often make you smile and her style of combining colour and graphite is distinctive and memorable.

Janet is a multi-award winning artist exhibiting regularly in Australia and overseas, including commissions by Australia Post for stamp images released in 2006 and 2009; artwork selected for “Focus in Nature” 2010 and 2012 as well as work selected for the permanent collection in the New York State Museum, USA, articles in Australian Artist magazine, Artists Palette and many other awards and publications. She is the 2011 recipient of the Lindsay King Arts Initiative Award. Janet is a popular tutor, running workshops all over Australia as well as judging many art exhibitions.

Janet has weekly classes at her Narre Warren North studio, Daytime and evening, Adults and Children, Beginners to Experienced skill levels.

Janet formally studied a Diploma of Visual Arts at Monash University and Graduate diploma of Visual Arts, Monash University, and Gippsland Campus. Janet supports and is a member of many professional art societies including Fellow of Wildlife Art Society of Australasia and Fellow of Australian Guild of Realist Artists.

Janet's work has been purchased for the New York State Museum, Australia Post, City of Monash Collection, Gold Coast City Art Gallery, Monterey Secondary College and for Private collections in Australia, Japan, UK, USA, China and England.
